Toddler toys that teach how to walk

Traditional Toddler Toys That Teach Tots To Walk

Traditional Toddler Toys That Teach Tots To Walk
By Gary Clay

Children, especially toddlers, love any toy that makes a noise, is bright and makes a noise. One of the more traditional toys, the pull along toy, encourages the child to move around - making the toy perform - and also brings confidence to that wobbly walk.

These pull-along toys come in many shapes and forms and engage the child in constructive play. The child makes noises, imagines he/she is the mum or dad of the toy - or the engine driver - and happily toddles around for hours.

One such toy, the chicken, nods its head and flaps its wings as the child rolls along with it. A crocodile opens and shuts its enormous mouth and its legs whiz around whilst being pulled along. Some have separate 'carriages' that can be hooked up together to make a 'train' and each carriage has a toy in it. These can be characters from much loved stories and give yet another interest to the child.

What makes these perennial old favourites survive in the modern world? Well, children will always be children and no matter how much the world is catapulted into the future there will always be room for the traditional toddler toy. We should be grateful too! How awful would it be to sit a small child down with a calculator or computer or whatever and expect them to play quietly! They are more likely to make a game out of the box or throw the thing around than actually play with it.

Have you ever wondered why, when a gift is inappropriate or the child has no interest in it, that they pick up the box and make it a ship, or a train, or in fact anything but a cardboard box? The answer lies in the imagination. Children are naturally curious and if they are disinterested they will automatically find something to play with. They need it to develop new skills and toys are supposed to not only entertain but to promote that natural curiosity.

In the world of the electronic toy traditional toys were thought to be losing popularity. Misguided folk were giving out play computers or electronic games thinking that the child will be totally enthralled but the opposite has been seen to be true in many cases.

The child who is given a pull-along toy will not only be provided with exercise he will also be given a chance to role play and involve others in the game. The imagination will be engaged and that crocodile will become a marauding animal terrorizing the village or some such.

Traditional toys will not replace the new, upcoming games for sure, but the trend that is occurring is that people are harking back to the 'good old days' which, of course, were not all that good but seem a little rosier in the face of the electronic gadget. More demand for anything other than electronics ensures that the great craft of toy-making will not be lost and for that we should all be extremely grateful!

Gary writes extensively on toddler toys for his blog and online toy shop Monkeyshine where you will find an amazing range of traditional toys.
